Site-specific poems by Marisela Norte

Throughout December 2011, Out the Window presented artist Marisela Norte’s unique perspective as a sharp observer & longtime bus rider in Los Angeles. 5 new poems by Norte appeared on TransitTV as Metro buses passed through 5 intersections between East Los Angeles & Mid-Wilshire. The project links physical & virtual worlds through digital media offerings that coax viewers to explore & reconsider what exists out their window.

As a multi-phase project, the presentation of poetry marks the third phase of Out the Window rolling out a new, innovative, geographically specific component.  Norte’s poems were triggered as buses enter five specific intersections, Norte wrote her poems with these intersections in mind as they relate to her daily commute & the people/places she observes along the way. For Norte the process reflects an appreciation for the landscape & venture of lost & found objects; “I have received many, many beautiful gifts on the sidewalks of the city; this is my thank you.   Norte’s poems:

  For Out the Window, short video portraits of places will be presented in the unusual context of the Los Angeles County Metro bus system, during spring and summer 2011. By sharing perspectives from individual households and neighborhoods to the city and region at large, Out the Window creates a mosaic of the many social, cultural, economic and creative layers of a complex American city.
